Roquetas de Mar is one of the rare, true holiday resorts on the Costa Almeria (the Province of Andalucia) but much quieter than its well known competitors. It is not as developed either, thereby guaranteeing a more peaceful break with plenty of elbow room of the impressive beaches.

It is never the less attracting more and more residents buoyed by the relatively cheap Roquetas property market and has seen its official population grow by over 50% in the last decade, giving it an increasingly prosperous feel.

Roquetas package holidays which were unheard of a few years ago are being offered by more and more tour companies for tourists keener to visit a piece of old Spain in this once fishing village resort, with a history dating back to Roman times.

There are more than enough local facilities to keep most people busy, whether it be taking part in water sports from the white beaches, golf, exploring and strolling through the narrow roads and ancient walkways or just sitting outside a quaint bar watching the world wander by.

The weather won’t disappoint either, with a very dry and warm climate, it is rapidly becoming a place to stay for short winter breaks, aided by its closeness to Almeria airport just a ten minute drive away.

Night life is not as hectic as other Spanish towns, but some of the bigger Roquetas hotels do put on entertainment during the high season. Dining is well catered for with a good choice offered in local and international cuisine at a reasonable cost.
